About Mark Wood . . . In an industry where originality is a highly prized commodity, recording artist, performer, producer, inventor and Emmy-winning composer Mark Wood is truly an original. He began his career with a full scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York and had the privilege of studying under Maestro Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Program.

As an electric violinist playing on his own line of patented instruments, Mark is a highly acclaimed international recording artist who has released six CDs of his highly original music and has toured and recorded with many of the industry's most prominent performers, including Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Lenny Kravitz, Everclear, and Jewel, among others. Mark is also lead violinist and string conductor with his multi-platinum selling rock orchestral group, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who recently completed their fifth sold-out arena tour. This past tour reached audiences exceeding 250,000 people. Mark is also being featured in Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider's latest project, "Van Helsing's Curse" - their first CD was just released.

In the capacity of composer, Mark started Mark Wood Music Productions, a company which focuses mainly on creating dramatic and inspirational pieces of music for television and film and has earned Mark a number of impressive video and audio production credits. The client list of Mark Wood Music includes many of the major television networks. He just received his first Emmy award for music he composed for CBS-TV's coverage of the 2002 Tour de France, and has been nominated twice before. He was commissioned by The Juilliard School to compose "Nest of Vipers" for their electric string quartet; its world premiere was at Lincoln Center in the spring of 2003. His Viper Concerto for electric 7-string and orchestra had its world premiere with the Greenwood Orchestra last summer.

In a groundbreaking collaboration between Mark Wood and string educator Beth Hankins, Mark has been working with The Lakewood Project for the last couple of years -this amazing rock orchestra is outfitted with an assortment of electric instruments by Wood Violins and had its world premiere at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in January 2003.

As the creator of the revolutionary Viper electric violin and most recently the Viper cello, Mark has changed the landscape of the electric violin and its applications in modern music by actually altering the shape of the instrument to accommodate the addition of Mark's own invention, his patented chest support system. This self-supporting device offers the violinist an unprecedented freedom of movement.

As part of his "Electrify Your Strings" program, Mark has taught at the Juilliard School, ASTA, Vanderbilt University, Berklee School of Music, the annual Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camps and Conferences, and many other schools and universities across the country.

He is currently working on the "Wood String Method Book" which will be published by Hal Leonard some time later this year.

4. Hal Leonard to publish Mark Wood string method book in 2005!
***************************************************
It's official - after 10 years of exhaustive research, the Mark Wood string method book (tentatively entitled "Electrify Your Strings!") is finally about to become a reality! Hal Leonard Corporation will be publishing the book in 2005. The book will include drills and exercises for teachers and students, as well as showmanship, physical movement and performance tips. There will be chapters focusing on the fretted violin, the movable frame fingerboard grid (mapping system to visualize patterns), pentatonic patterns, blues scales, exotic and jazz scales, exploring chords on the violin, 5-string/6-string/7-string exercises, modern string techniques. There will also be a special bonus CD that will feature performances by Mark Wood and members of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra along with Mark's band in a play-along type of experience, and will include a never-before-released song exclusive to this book.

Here's an excerpt from Mark Wood's introduction to the book:

"I'm not interested in breeding athletes on the violin.
I'm interested in strengthening your experience
of a deeper connection to your music and a more meaningful relationship
with your listeners.
When you hear John Lennon's beautiful song "Imagine,"
its emotional impact is immediately evident.
We, as musicians, are solely responsible for establishing this connection
in our performance experience.
We must train our instincts as well as our technique to truly create
a more personal and meaningful relationship with our musical experience."
